As a lead-in to the future redevelopment of the Carlton United Brewery (CUB) site in Broadway, the part road closure of Balfour Street and the installation of a small pocket park provides pedestrian access into One Central Park via Chippendale Green. Balfour Pocket Park utilises materials that reflect both the past history of the site whilst acknowledging the contemporary reuse. The scope of works included bulk excavation, storm water and subsoil drainage, electrical works, trachyte kerbing, mortar jointed brick on edge paving and a brick paved swale, feature art paving incorporation crushed glass tiles manufactured in-house, precast concrete bridge / walkway units, washed aggregate concrete, precast furniture and soft landscapes. The project has received a number of awards including the 2010 Horbury Hunt – Think Brick Award and in 2012, a NSW / ACT Excellence in Landscape Construction Award for Commercial / Civil projects.
